Tell us about Jaxonbilt!

Jaxonbilt Hats Australia are real hats for real country people. Jaxonbilt hats are handcraft custom palm leaf hats for all sorts of people who know a good hat makes all the difference. Whether you’re riding horses, chasing cattle, heading to a rodeo, or dressing up for a country race, there’s a Jaxonbilt for every occasion.

How did Jaxonbilt Australia come to life? What inspired you to start the Australian branch of the business?

Jaxonbilt Australia really came to life back in 2013 when I started working for Jaxonbilt Hats International. I fell in love with the craft and the quality straight away. Over time, I grew the business here at home and eventually created Jaxonbilt Hats Australia—and I’ve never looked back. What started as a passion turned into a purpose, and now it’s a full-blown way of life.

What sets a Jaxonbilt hat apart from others on the market?

Every Jaxonbilt hat is shaped by hand, one at a time. I use palm leaf, which holds its shape, keeps the sun off, and can handle the rough and tumble of country life.

But more than that, every hat’s made to suit the person wearing it—style, size, personality and all.

How involved are you in the design and customization process for each hat?

Oh, I’m hands-on from the first hello to the final touch. I chat with each customer to work out what they need, then I shape, stiffen, trim and finish it all myself. No two hats are the same, and I like it that way.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a small business owner in Australia?

Keeping up with demand without losing that personal touch. I’ve been blessed with a lot of support, but when it’s just me, it’s a juggle. I never want to rush a hat, so finding that balance has been the toughest bit.

How do you balance running a niche, quality-focused business with staying profitable and scalable?

By staying true to what makes Jaxonbilt special—custom work, quality materials, and genuine service. I’ve had to learn to say no to things that don’t fit our values, even when they might bring in quick money. Slow and steady’s how I’m building something to last.

Have you always been drawn to the Western or country lifestyle? How has it shaped your life and business?

Absolutely. I grew up in the bush, where hard work, honesty, and looking out for your neighbours was just how things were done. That country mindset runs through everything I do, especially the way I treat my customers and how I run the shop.

What does a typical day in your life look like from sun-up to sundown?

A typical day kicks off early with a gym session to get the body moving, then it’s home for breaky . After that, I’m into chatting with clients, replying to messages, and getting stuck into hat orders in the shop. I try to stay focused and work right up until the mail run at 3pm. Somewhere in amongst all that, I also keep the books ticking over for our helicopter business and stay on top of the general maintenance around the place.  Afternoons are full of customer calls, quotes, and planning what’s next. Every day’s different, and that’s what I love about it.

Do you have any mentors or role models who have guided your journey as an entrepreneur?

The original Jaxonbilt team in America gave me the confidence to get started, and I’ll always be grateful. But mostly, I look up to the hard-working rural women around me—friends, mums, business owners, community leaders—they inspire me every day.

What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?

What might surprise people is just how many hats I wear—literally and figuratively! I run two businesses, shape every hat by hand, handle the books, keep things ticking on the property, and still make time to hit the gym most mornings. On top of that, I’m the secretary for the Twin Hills Rodeo and Show, and I’m also part of a new venture called Bush Bloom, which I’ve started up with a group of mates. It’s all go around here, but I thrive on the chaos—and I reckon I wouldn’t know what to do with a quiet day!

How do you stay grounded and motivated during busy or challenging times?

Country life keeps you humble. When things get hectic, I remind myself why I started—to create something beautiful with my hands, connect with people, and give them something they’ll treasure. A cuppa and a moment out in the paddock helps, too.

Western fashion is experiencing a real resurgence, why do you think that is?

Because it’s real. It’s timeless, tough, and rooted in tradition. People are craving authenticity, and Western style tells a story. Plus, there’s something empowering about putting on a hat and boots—you feel ready to take on the world.

Who or what influences your personal style?

I’m inspired by strong country women, classic western looks, and a bit of wild bush spirit. I love something practical but with a touch of flair—especially when it comes to hats and accessories.

What’s your go-to outfit when you want to feel confident and strong?

A well-fitted pair of jeans, boots that’ve seen some miles, and one of my own hats—usually a bit dusty, but worn with pride.

Do you have a favourite style or colour of hat you like to wear?

I’ve got a soft spot for a 5” brim with a Cool Hand Luke shape—it’s bold, classic, and always turns heads. Colour-wise, I love a rich dark oak or a natural straw with a good contrast band. Something that says you mean business but still has a bit of flair.

What’s next for Jaxonbilt Aus? Are there any exciting projects, collaborations, or new directions on the horizon that you can share?

I’ve  just opened a brand new hat shop right here on our property, which has been a huge step for me. It gives customers a place to visit, try on styles, and have a yarn while I shape their hat. And to be honest, it’s also an awesome place to knock off in the arvo and have a beer on the verandah with the crew—it’s got a real good vibe. I’m also working on a few exciting collabs with rodeo riders and country race folk, and there’s talk of rolling out more ready-to-wear lines—still handcrafted, just a little quicker for those who don’t want to wait.
